The aim of the International Baccalaureate IB Middle Years Programme MYP is to provide a well-rounded education where students learn to the best of their ability and are well-prepared for the next stage of their education.

Communication Skills: Learning is emphasized as a tool for the acquisition of all knowledge. Effective written and oral expression enables the student to make impactful contributions and share meaningful insights by communicating with others and developing their own individuality and sense of self. Intercultural Awareness: As an IB World School, the MYP celebrates the inclusivity and diversity of The York School Community and promotes an international perspective by awakening in young people an interest in the diverse cultures and attitudes of people.

Students will be encouraged to celebrate their own unique heritage and to be welcoming of others. Teachers use resources and texts that capture a diverse range of voices and our homeroom programme and service initiatives further emphasize the fundamental, positive values of the common heritage of human beings. In the Middle School, learning is focused first on developing skills essential to academic success, such as responsibility, organization, collaboration, independent work and initiative.

In the final year of the programme, optional MYP eAssessment provides IB-validated grades based on examinations and course work.

Find out more about MYP assessment. The MYP is open to any student aged 11 to 16, at schools that have been authorized to implement the programme. The MYP is inclusive by design; students of all interests and academic abilities can benefit from their participation.

Implementation of the MYP is a whole-school endeavour, although the programme can accommodate academically-selective models. A program's eligibility tells you who can apply to it. Students who live and attend schools in other districts are not eligible to apply to that program, and will not see or have it as an option on their application. Think of programs as doorways into a school. Some middle schools have more than one program, such as a general education program and a Dual Language Spanish program.

You can also enter a school's name at schoolsearch. Visiting a school in person or virtually can help you learn if it may be the right place for your child. Check schools' MySchools pages for links to their websites, as well as for direct links to resources for prospective families, such as information about any in-person or virtual events, or video tours of the school.

How can you know your child's chances of getting an offer to a specific program? And how do you increase your chances of getting an offer to a program on your application?

It helps to start by learning how offers are made. Students get offers to programs based on four key factors:. To learn more about how each of these factors works, read on and watch the following videos—learn why your middle school application choices matter and find out about other factors, such as admissions priorities and seat availability. For Your Application: Your middle school application will show your designation. This is not something you are able to choose or edit.

Adapted Physical Education APE and Related services, such as speech, occupational therapy OT , and physical therapy PT , are not considered special education instructional programming for the purposes of middle school admissions.

For Your Application: It's a good idea to apply to some average-demand programs rather than all high-demand programs. The higher a program's applicants per seat demand , the lower chance any applicant has to get an offer to it. If a program has multiple admissions priorities, students are considered in groups. For Your Application: As you explore your middle school options, check which admissions priority group your child is in for each program of interest.
